Research Studies

Chase takes part in a study today by the Emory Down Syndrome clinic, which is currently studying the differences in development between babies with DS with heart defects, and those without heart defects. Although part of me questions the sanity of spending yet another morning with doctors, I think it is a great opportunity for Chase to have another chance for his development to be benchmarked by a specialist so that we can see how he is doing and what specific things we need to work on. We will get a full copy of Chase's report and will be told if there is anything we should keep an eye on. Of course, it also feels good to know that we're doing what we can to help future babies with Down syndrome as well!

The research being done today regarding Down syndrome is very exciting. Several studies are looking at the relationship between DS and Alzheimer's, as the disease occurs often and early in adults with DS. Other studies are looking at the relationship between DS and cancer, as cancer occurs so infrequently in those with DS - one advantage of having the syndrome! (Click Here for article) The idea that those with DS may lead to the development of new cancer treatments is very exciting!

  1. How wonderful that you and little Chasey are taking part in this study! A friend of mine just had a little baby with DS and I've been hoping that she would blog and share too. I'll send her your link right now! I think you would inspire her!
