The Little Guy's Vocal Chords

We had our regular checkup with the ENT today (we go every 3 months) and were happy to find that there was no fluid in Chase's ears and his hearing was good. The doctor took a look at his voice box though, and found it was really irritated from all the reflux. Having irritated vocal chords is probably the reason he doesn't want to make noises - makes sense, right?

(Several people have already asked how they check the vocal chords - they stick a tiny microscope on the end of a tube up the nose and down the throat, like a feeding tube.)

The ENT was relieved to hear we already have an appointment with a GI doctor to get the reflux under control..... after trying three different reflux medicines, we still can't make it go away! It's frustrating that nothing has worked so far, and so saddening to hear about the trouble it's causing. Not only do we want to keep his throat from hurting, but we want him to be able to move ahead with his speech. Kids with Down syndrome already have obstacles to overcome in learning to speak clearly, and Chase has an even further disadvantage with his vocal chords so irritated. Please pray that the appointment on Wednesday with the GI doctor will go well and that we will find a solution to this reflux problem!

On a different note, I'm adding a couple more pictures from the Buddy Walk. We had a lot of fun catching up with some friends we had not seen in a while, including one couple whose son was born at the same hospital just a week or two before Chase and with a post-natal diagnosis of Down Syndrome as well. What a fun day :)
