15 Month Checkup & Sleep Study Results

Chase's fifteen month pediatrician checkup went well today despite some boggling weight issues.

For some reason, he has lost a pound and a half over the past six month despite eating lots and lots. We've even been supplementing his diet with oils (flax seed, fish, sunflower) to get more fat and calories in his diet. On the typical child charts, he is at 55% for height and well off the bottom of the chart for weight. On the Down syndrome charts (which we had never needed to use before today) he is at 95% for height and 50% for weight. As you can see, he is super-tall and slim. We're going to discuss this with the GI doctor and run some blood and stool studies next month. There may be a malabsorbtion or digestive issue that we would need to address.

The sleep study results were in and showed several apnea episodes and a couple drops in oxygen levels, but all of them were self corrected and not severe. So this is good news - if there is an apnea issue, it is minor. We will monitor his symptoms and may repeat the study in 6-12 months. In the meantime, the pediatrician finally gave us antibiotics to clear up the congestion which has made it so hard for him to breathe! I'm so glad we can finally help clear all that up!

So next week is the ENT for his regular ear appointment and hearing tests. We will discuss ear tubes and so far everyone is telling us to go for it.

All in all his appointment was good - apart from the weight loss, Chase is doing fantastic! He even got his big nasty shots with hardly a peep from him! And all the while, he entertained the staff and flirted with all the other patients - What a fun happy baby!!

  1. So glad the sleep apnea test went well...I can't imagine trying to get a child so young to sleep with a CPAP! I can tell you I have been so happy with the results of Emily getting tubes, it has made a world of difference!

  2. That's great that the sleep apnea test went well. I hope all goes well with the GI test too.
Matthew had ear tubes too. They've fallen out now and he doesn't need a new set...not now anyway. I think he didn't have any major ear infections because he had the tubes.
