Siblings and Disability

Trent has been an especially doting older brother lately. Since Chase can blow kisses, Trent responds in kind with lots of return kisses, hugs, smiles, and coos. It's adorable and it gives me an unbelievable happiness to see them loving on each other. With their temperaments, I can see this extending far into the future - or at least that is my hope and continual prayer!

Thicker Than Water: Essays by Adult Siblings of People with DisabilitiesI read an article posted on a listserve today, which spoke about the impact of siblings where there is a disability. (click here for the article) The main person cited is Don Meyer, who has headed up an organization to study and promote relationships among siblings where one sibling has a disability. He has published a compilation of essays that adults have wrote about having a sibling with special needs - Thicker Than Water - and a similar book with essays written by teens, called the The Sibling Slam Book. I'm looking forward to reading the book and hopefully picking up some tips for cultivating a mutually supportive and loving relationship between the two boys!
