Kathy Ireland: The Tragic Shortfall in Down Syndrome Research

Great article by Kathy Ireland on AOL News about the lack of money and attention being spent on research regarding Down syndrome.

DS is the primary genetic disorder and touches 1 in 800 babies born in the US. It has helped doctors and researchers better understand Alzheimer's, and other diseases that affect the population at large. However, it still does not attract the funding and weight that could significantly impact the way doctors understand and treat Down syndrome.

Many people do not realize how much can be done to further the abilities of those with DS - starting at birth with early intervention, or even in utero with close analysis into the impacted systems (heart, etc). Research into the condition can help us know what more can be done!
